Counseling, Supervision and Hypnotherapy Services

Individual therapy

I work with individuals, couples and families. I have been working with adults over the age of 18 for over 20 years. I have had experience in the university, hospital, outpatient treatment center, and private practice settings. I see individuals for issues ranging from depression, anxiety/panic, and relationship problems to mood disorders, coping with illness, grief and self-growth.

couples counseling

I often see couples as they are starting out in their relationship and wanting to go forward on the right foot or when they have become bogged down in difficulty. At each point in a relationship there are decisions to be made and when a couple is committed to staying together and working through their issues they bring hope which can be useful to the process.

family therapy

Each situation/issue a family brings is unique due to the differences in the relationships, communication styles, and patterns of behavior. Though, over the years, I have found some interventions, techniques, or exercises helpful each family is different and so we work to maintain hope as we find new ways to get through old problems.

Counseling Style

Dr. Housker’s style is grounded in Adlerian Theory and Practice. The most central ideas of this theory are based on the belief that we are interdependent, cooperative individuals, that who you are as a person is more important than a diagnosis or problem, and that all behavior has purpose. Alfred Adler believed that behavior is determined by the meaning we attribute to life. Therefore, understanding meaning will help in changing thoughts and behaviors that are counterproductive to what is in your best interest. It is a belief that we do not necessarily mature so much as that we develop patterns.

Supervision services

Dr. Housker is an Approved Clinical Supervisor. She has been trained in providing individual/dyad and group supervision. She uses a Holistic-Developmental - Adlerian model. She utilizes the Reflecting Team approach with groups to,assist supervisees to develop skill and insight to better serve clients. She has provided supervision for the past 20+ years to those seeking licensure as well as Master's level counseling students at three universities.

hypnotherapy

At 31 Stories LLC, hypnotherapy work is used to complement therapy, not in lieu of therapy. Dr. Housker's approach in hypnotherapy is solution oriented and permissive. The belief is that each person knows the right direction for him/her and the role of the hypnotherpist is to keep you moving toward your goal and to assist as useful.

Further information is listed below.

Dr. Housker uses Solution oriented Hypnotherapy

There are differences between Traditional Hypnotherapy and Solution Oriented Hypnotherapy. Traditional hypnotherapy relies on the authority and power of the hypnotist, and often focuses on uncovering repressed trauma that may be creating problems to implant new positive beliefs. Solution oriented hypnotherapy is based more on recollection and evocation than suggestion, and the belief that people have answers/knowledge within. The work that Dr. Housker does is not focused on searching for past traumas, hidden motives, or decisions that created the problem. Instead, hypnotherapy is used to simply help you focus on the presenting complaint you provide me and help you to find the internal resources you possess which are needed to resolve or shift it.

A few common concerns of those considering hypnotherapy tend to be fears of being unconscious, out of control and powerless. When hypnotized you are not unconscious and you have control in the process at all stages. Together we collaborate so that we work on what you want to work on and you understand all steps in the process. Hypnotherapy is an empowering process and anything you don’t like in it you are able to delete or reject. When in hypnosis the mind is active, and you can hear every sound in the room and are in communication with the therapist. If at any time you are uncomfortable, you are able to merely open your eyes and wake. It is your process, and I am not here to pry or dig up issues that you are not wanting, willing or able to work through. The process of solution oriented hypnotherapy is strengthening and positive so you are more likely to discover those things that will be of use to you.

*Hypnotherapy is most beneficial in working on those problems or issues which a person cannot produce on command. Talk therapy is more useful when a problem can be changed by deliberate efforts, activities, and changes within a person’s control. Issues for which hypnotherapy may be of most use include panic attacks, dissociation, depression, anxiety, insomnia, shame, borderline issues, PTSD problems, as well as personal growth.
